Centenas de pessoas feridas estavam abrigadas em um corredor nas dependências do hospital, segundo moradores da região.
Autoridades da defesa civil dizem que a explosão foi resultado de um ataque aéreo israelense e que centenas de pessoas estão presas nos escombros.
O gabinete de comunicação social do governo do Hamas em Gaza classificou o ataque ao hospital como um "crime de guerra".
"O hospital atendia centenas de doentes e feridos, e pessoas deslocadas à força das suas casas", afirmou o Hamas.
O comunicado diz que "centenas de vítimas ainda estão sob os escombros".
